The Sun Stands Still, But We Do Not
I never knew the exact definition of the word solstice, so word nerd that I am, I googled it. Solstice is based on the Latin word ‘sol,’ meaning sun and ‘sistere’ meaning standing still. It came to be because the sun appeared to be standing still at the highest point from the equator.
But, of course, the sun never stands still. It just looks that way.
Have we reached some kind of high point? Are we standing still? Based on the numbers from last weekend’s No Kings Day, inertia has departed the building. (that’s an Elvis reference in case you’re not a boomer!)
As bombs drop and the threat of dropping bombs escalates, my thoughts veer to the Bigger Question: Why do we still believe that violence, force and destruction will accomplish anything other than bloodshed, rage, resentment and revenge?
As a forever pacifist, there is no logic that will convince me that violence has ever created a permanent solution. It may “get rid of” a problem temporarily only to create more problems.
Perhaps an even Bigger Question is whether we will stand still. Will we succumb to being an observer, watching the sun as it rises and sets? Do we have enough courage, trust and impetus to motivate action of some kind?
A Crossroads
As I read about all that’s going on in our world, it feels as if humanity is at a major crossroads. We either continue in the same direction (you know the definition of insanity, right?) or choose to make fundamental changes.
But why are we at this place? What’s the real reason?
We have reached this tipping point from the ongoing (false) notion that we are separate.
If we did not believe we were separate, would we bomb another nation? If we did not believe we were separate, would we destroy the environment? If we did not believe we were separate, would we judge and label people based on their external description, their sexual orientation, where they were born or what language they speak?
The obvious answer is NO to all those questions.
In other more positive words, if we knew we were all connected, all the same, all here to remember who we really are and manifest our sacred purpose, none of the above actions would even be considered. It would not be in our reality.
Feeling connected means knowing that we humans function from primitive, survival-based fear most if not all the time. It’s also knowing that underneath that fear, we are trying to remember who we really are: Love-based, empowered beings.
It’s one thing to know all that logically. Quite another to actually remember it about yourself. When that happens, you feel compassion which instantly, organically, connects you to others.
What is Neohumanism?
I’ve been teaching a concept for over four decades but never knew it had an actual title: Neohumanism. This scientific-sounding word is the true definition of what we are striving for.
“Neohumanism is a holistic philosophy, developed by Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, that expands upon traditional humanism by advocating for a universal love and interconnectedness of all beings, both animate and inanimate. It emphasizes the importance of both individual and collective progress, transcending narrow self-interests and national boundaries.”
In Albert Einstein’s brilliant words: “Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”
I was surprised to find out that neohumanism is supported by contemporary science. It’s thrilling to see the left-brainers are finally catching up with ancient and indigenous wisdom emphasizing the interwoven and interdependent web of life.
This philosophy encourages going beyond the human-centered outlook that’s strictly concerned with achievement, acquisition and survival by any means. It implies that there are no groups, nationalities, tribes, religions, sexes or ethnicities that are better than any other.
Most importantly, it underlines that the fate of all humanity, all beings, is inalienably bound together. These notions are the core foundation for a transformed society as well as the survival of humanity. Literally.
Whether you know it consciously or not, you are striving to attain this level of consciousness every minute of your life.
Now, being faced with forces attempting to stop this evolution, it’s inspiring an even more rapid shift from fear to love. If you choose to see it that way.
Can it happen?
The neohumanism philosophy sure sounds nice, but what does it mean in practice?
In my personal experience, I only began to understand connectedness beyond a pretty sounding theory when I started having profound spiritual experiences. When I would meet someone and absolutely know everything about them without their uttering a word. When I would feel the pain of a catastrophic event happening on the other side of the globe. When I would sob for someone’s loss when they couldn’t. And when the feeling of loss no longer existed since spiritual connections can never break.
Although spiritual connection is described differently in different cultures, its essence is universal. It’s an experience that transcends the external; the realization of a cosmic presence that fosters a deep respect toward all beings. It’s knowing that we all want to get past our limited identities and false programmed beliefs to join with all life.
Evolving to a neohumanism attitude will create the basis for a new social reality beyond the fragmented divide we are now in. It will promote universal human dignity; a respect for all of nature and the cherishment of our home planet. From that reality, social values will arise naturally.
Many are awakening to this, knowing that humanity’s future depends on incorporating a universal unity. As we experience knowing we are spirits, we evolve past needing to oppress, dominate or destroy.
The more that each of us transmutes to that place, others will naturally start riding the wave. But we may need to get louder to awaken those who have fallen back asleep or haven’t remembered yet.
My usual reminder: You know why you chose to come here during these challenging, transformative times. You can no longer sit in full lotus position, meditating, hidden away in a cave. It’s time to no longer identify as a separate, disconnected human living in a body. We are so much more than that.
Knowing experientially that everything is connected will change every action you take. It will empower you to honor and respect the entire web of life on this planet and beyond. You will be part of creating a sustainable, harmonious, nurturing society and live your own life that way.
I have no doubt that these changes are happening. We all sense that the survival of the planet depends on them. All that’s happening is shaking us to finally awaken us.
I know that no one would sit and do nothing as their house burned to the ground.
The sun is not standing still, and neither are we.
