Recently, a friend who had just watched my “It’s All Mirrors” show said something that stuck with me. I’ve learned that when something sticks like I’m stepping in chewing gum, there must be something for me to ponder!
She said, “Royce, you do know that not many are ready to do this deep work, right?”
I heartily agreed. After over four decades teaching my Perfect Life Awakening program, I’ve seen that over and over. And over. Students sign up all excited and rarin’ to go, but once they realize that this spiritually based inner work takes work, they frequently disappear.
Many are under the false impression that you just repeat a few affirmations, learn to visualize what you want, meditate a few times, memorize a few buzz words and poof! You are officially decreed as spiritual!
Sorry-not-sorry, it does take more than that. Unless you’re okay with faking it through life. Which many seem to be expert at. That is, until life kicks them in the butt.
Not sure about the accuracy of this statistic, but I’ve heard that only one percent are brave enough to delve inside. Yikes! Based on the amount of people I see online offering “spiritual coaching” and other personal development programs, maybe that’s shifting.
IT’S CHALLENGING
The toughest aspect of awakening authentic spirituality is that “thing” I harp on repeatedly to my students I call “Mirroring.”
Here’s my bottom-line definition: Nothing can ever be suppressed or denied without coming up in some way somewhere. It’s a law of energy that if you push down on one side of a seesaw, the other side comes up.
For sure it’s not easy to accept that concept. Not many want to take responsibility for their life to that degree. Easier to blame others and be The Victim. Easier to not delve inside and discover who you really are. Easier to not be in touch with your purpose. Easier to live unconsciously.
Often, the minute I explain Mirroring, students try to prove me wrong. Or get glazed eyed, shifting in their chairs, stifling yawns. Even after weeks of talking about various aspects of mirroring, I’ve had students tentatively raise their hand and say, “What’s mirroring again?”
I used to take it personally. Not anymore. Nor do I dumb down my teachings to get people to stay. Been there, done that, and I won’t rip people off from the truth that I’m here to teach.
I figure, if someone isn’t ready, they’re just not supposed to be my student. The ones who are, stay, willingly delving within to discover more about themselves. And, believe me, there’s a lot to see since us humans have been hanging out on this planet for quite a while.
SPIRITUAL LABELS
Throughout my current life, there have been several labels posted on me: Female, intelligent, shy, artistic, channeler, shop owner, entrepreneur. But honestly, the most challenging one was “spiritual.”
That title is so misunderstood and misjudged in our society. When people hear that you’re spiritual, they make assumptions that you’re wearing robes, sitting in full lotus position on a mountain top meditating, chanting and fasting. They may even roll their eyes or make fun of you. (Think Marianne Williamson’s political aspirations)
Those notions verify that the journey toward spiritual awakening is inherently challenging. Certainly not for the faint of heart or those in a hurry.
SO, WHAT IS AUTHENTIC SPIRITUALITY?
Here’s a shallow dive into what it means to be spiritual. Warning: I make it sound easy, but it might be the hardest job of your entire life.
-This might sound contradictory, but to attain true spirituality, you need to discover who you are NOT. Otherwise, spirituality becomes a performance by an actor, not a truth. This includes digging through social and familial conditioning and locating the false, limiting beliefs and fears you bought into. This excavation is not always an easy task since it’s taken years or lifetimes to blur and forget who you really are.
-Going deeper, there are scores of things you decided about yourself, others and life during incidents of pain or loss, or from times you believe you caused pain or loss. Those incidents become your inner programming and are tucked way back in your subconscious mind. Often, they are tough to retrieve and release. (Shameless plug: That’s what I do in my Perfect Life Awakening program)
-And then, there are previous lives thrown into the mix. Whether or not you believe in reincarnation, those lives are impacting you. Memories that pop in unprovoked. Situations that feel like déjà vu. Vague notions about who you are and why you are here. But you’ve probably been taught to ignore all that as “weird” or “scary” or “illogical.”
The ultimate goal of those steps is to experience being not just a physical body. It’s about transcending the material aspects of life, going beyond your senses and fear-based survival concerns. It’s about awakening a profound connection with your Higher Consciousness, the universe, God.
Authentic spirituality is the courage to be who you really are. To have no concern about fitting in or conforming to socially accepted norms in a society concerned with sameness. To feel no need to defend or explain yourself or your spirituality.
Spirituality is evolution from fear to love from a real place, not from trying to fake it. It prioritizes inner and outer peace over external success. It knows that lasting fulfillment and joy comes from within. That self-realization means being real. All. The. Time.
Most significantly, true spirituality is unearthing the Real Reason you are here. Expressing what you are meant to contribute to this life. Manifesting the form your love is supposed to take. Trusting your internal guidance as it leads you to live a fully empowered existence.
From one who has lived from both places, there is nothing that brings more intense fulfillment than living a Purposeful life. And, simultaneously, nothing is more demanding.
A BIT OF A WARNING
Once you open that door, even a crack, there’s no other choice but to go inside; to follow your truth, your heart, your path. The pull is too strong to ignore.
And if you don’t, well, all kinds of conflict and dissatisfaction can occur. Lying to your awakening self just doesn’t work.
Know that the rewards of actual inner peace, extreme connectedness, constant trust and fulfillment of your reason for being are definitely worth it.
Attaining True Spirituality could be the journey of your lifetime. It takes as long as it takes.
But no worries. You do have forever.
