EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON -- AND OTHER (TRUE) SPIRITUAL CLICHES
(My apologies —- I inadvertently posted this on the incorrect Substack two weeks ago! Ahhh technology!)
True confession: My absolute most annoying spiritual cliché ever is “Everything happens for a reason.” I know, as a spiritual teacher I’m supposed to regard those words in high esteem, preach them compassionately when something horrific happens and encourage my students to just “look at the bright side,” right?
But, as you might be experiencing lately, it’s challenging to see the “reason” in what’s going on. Maybe everything that’s going on. It’s pretty much impossible to just “look at the bright side” when things are murky, illogical, illegal and terrifying.
Here’s my next confession: Although “Everything happens for a reason” is prosaic and overused and encourages suppressing emotions, it is true.
Ever since embarking on my spiritual journey decades ago, my life has been focused on discovering those reasons. As a serious skeptic, it took scores of “weird” things happening to convince me of those reasons. Some I couldn’t deny. Others took a while. Like when devastating things would happen and months (or years) later they would make perfect sense. Or when I’d want something desperately, and it wouldn’t manifest no matter how hard I tried. It was hard to doubt when I would discover what would not have happened had I received it.
Like the time I had an intense, crystal-clear vision in meditation that instructed me to drive to a tiny town in Colorado, sell my house and move there. So, obedient spiritual person that I am, I packed my car and took my four-year-old son on a road trip to said town. Locating a local realtor, I soon found the precise place I had seen unfold in my vision.
As I sat at his desk, pen poised, ready to sign papers, like in a dream, he stood up, thanked me, and said he would contact me “soon.” He never did. And he never returned my calls.
Now, if you’ve ever dealt with realtors, one thing you can count on is they want to make a sale. In fact, they can be quite annoyingly persistent about it. To have this agent never get back to me was beyond bizarre.
I was wise enough to listen to the more blatant message from the Universe and chose to not put my house up for sale. Low and behold, shortly after I returned from Colorado, my classes expanded exponentially, and I met my future husband. Neither of those life-changing events would have happened in Colorado where I would have ended up waitressing!
So, yes, that event pushed, or should I say shoved me into trusting that everything does happen for a reason (or two). Going through that showed me that sometimes it takes things as dramatic as detailed visions to lead where you are actually supposed to go -- home.
BUT HOW ‘BOUT NOW?
Can we trust that all that’s going on is happening for a reason? Of course it is, and as I say every week in my articles, there is a massive transformation that’s spurring us into a completely different consciousness on this planet. What’s happening could not be more perfect.
However, if you are not a change-welcoming person, terrified of stepping out of that uncomfortable "comfort zone" box you're cramped in, these tumultuous times could be torturous. Believing and trusting that change is good is your next challenging cliche'.
If it helps, know you are not alone. In my role of helping people transform (AKA change), I have yet to find anyone who isn’t afraid of change to some degree. My clients all proclaim they want change, but subconsciously they're attached to the 'security' of the known. Even if that known is agonizing and toxic.
For most people, that stomach-turning fear of change is the powerful hurdle lurking in the background. The more power it has, the more we fight to stay stuck and not even realize it. Plus, we subconsciously do things to sabotage change when it’s happening.
THAT PESKY FEAR OF CHANGE
But why be afraid of change when everything is changing? All. The. Time.
It looks like things stop and start in life, but it’s actually a cycle of change. For something to start, something has to end, AKA change. For something to end, something has to start, AKA change.
In other words, life is all just changes.
Even if you've done everything to be prepared and ready for change, the primitive part of your consciousness will be in fight/flight/freeze mode anticipating it. Plus, there are probably some dueling needs going on: You are resisting it since change is scary yet simultaneously craving it since you fear boredom.
When you look deeply at fear of change, it's often hiding issues about not deserving. Do I deserve to have something different? What if it’s, OMG, good?
When surprise changes happen, you feel out of control, like a victim. Whether it’s an unexpected job loss, a sudden death, a computer crash, an unplanned pregnancy or something much smaller, deep fears get triggered.
Yet, those unexpected changes can inspire courage, heroism, trust, helpfulness, caring, resilience, etc. Looking back, those jolts can be seen as powerful, awakening life lessons, leading you somewhere you needed to go. Or helping you see that certain changes were not supposed to happen, like, ahem, moving to Colorado.
Here's a spiritual truth that is not a cliché: On a higher consciousness level you chose every aspect of your life. Part of you knows the changes you need to go through as well as what you will experience in this life. Most often, you're kept in the mystery to prevent you from attempting to stop those important life-changing events.
Knowing that you chose the changes "thrown" at you can help you trust and go with the flow of life. You must've known you could handle them, right? Really, you did!
Besides, the more you resist your lessons, the more this insistent universe does its ‘thing’ and forces them.
Moral of the story: You may as well enjoy this ever-changing human ride you are on! It's an "e-ticket" for sure and you chose it just for fun! (And to clean up all you are in denial of)
The Big Changes going on everywhere are ushering in and accelerating planetary shifts that would not be happening without them.
So, here’s your final true cliché: It’s all good!
